Water pipes burst and leak for a number of reasons, corrosion, temperature change, rust, age, poor installation and many other reasons. You may not be able to stop a water leak before it happens, but how are you going to find it once it does?

Unless a water leak happens under a sink, where you can see the pipe, how can you locate the leak? What happens if the leak happens in a pipe hidden behind the scene? Or under the ground or a concrete slab?

If you suspect a water leak, it is important to find the source before any more damage is done. But how do you know if you have a water leak?  Look for these signs.

Water bills can fluctuate a little, but as a homeowner, it is important to have a good idea of how much water you consume each month. If you aren’t sure, look online at past water bills. A sudden spike in your bill is a sign of an undetected water leak.  Look at all the exposed pipes and if you still can’t locate the source, contact the Leak Doctor. 

Decrease in water pressure 

A drop in water pressure is an obvious sign of a damaged pipe or a leak. If you notice a decrease in the water pressure, contact a professional right away. 

Water marks 

Plumbing pipes run under the floors, ground, and between walls. Water marks on the walls or floor. Also, be on the look out for any wet areas or warm spots on the floor. 

Standing water 

If you notice any puddles in the yard when there shouldn’t be, is cause for concern. 

Musty odor or discolored water

Pinhole leaks can be caused by corrosion and rust. Which can lead to discolored water and a musty smell in the home. 

Unusual pipes sounds or water noise 

If you notice your pipes making a banging sound or if it sounds like water is running when everything is turned off, it is a sign of a water leak. 

Take the water meter test 

Make sure everything that uses water in the house is turned off 

Read the water meter 

With everything remaining off, wait one hour, then read the water meter.
