Want to Save Money? Detect and Repair Water Leaks

One of the most expensive systems in your Central Florida home is the plumbing.  Just a small pinhole leak from age or corrosion can go unnoticed and end up causing significant damage. It is a good idea to get into the habit of inspecting your plumbing on a regular basis. This small investment of time, can end up saving you thousands of dollars in repairs.

But How Do You Start?

Want to Save Money? Detect and Repair Water Leaks - Leak Detection Blog | Orlando, Florida | Leak Doctor - iStock_000023474973SmallA good place to start is in the bathroom and kitchen. Check under the sinks. Remove the items underneath the sink, check the exposed plumbing for any moisture. Look for any unexplained water or mold.

Then look for any loose tile in the bathroom, peeling paint, or blistering wallpaper, these are all signs of a water leak.

Other indications of a water leak include, discolored water, slow draining pipes, the sound of water running when the appliances and faucets are off, a musty or mildew smell, low water pressure, wet flooring, spots on the walls or ceiling, sewage backing up, high water bills, and wet areas in the yard.

Undetected water leaks can manifest behind the scene and cause significant damage. Unfortunately, water pipes don't last forever, eventually they break down and start slowly leaking.

Check the Water Meter

With all the water using appliances turned off and nobody is using the water in the home, check to see if the flow indicator on the water meter is registering. If all the water is off it should not be moving. Read the meter and come back in about an hour, if there isn't any water usage in the home the meter should read the same, if the meter has increased, it indicates a leak.
